Buildings that belong to residential, commercial or industrial zones can be made untouchable (also known as protected). That means, they will never be auto-replaced by another building. In Sandbox mode, when placing a RCI building from the menu, it automatically gets the untouchable status. This can be disabled in options.
The untouchable symbol represents the symbol that is added onto protected buildings in real cities.
